Here is a sobering stat related by the Economist. Interpret it as you will:
Horrifyingly, although home to only 5% of the world’s population, in 2014 the Arab world accounted for 45% of the world’s terrorism, 68% of its battle-related deaths, 47% of its internally displaced and 58% of its refugees.
Surely there is no clear cut answer to the question in the title. But allow the raw numbers to sink in.
What can be done to change them?

What are the statistics from other years. From the beginning this area of the world has been fighting with each other. Is this a change from previous years?

Good question, these necessary stats weren’t in the article. But from a quick glimpse of history I think that refugees have been higher in Africa and SE Asia for much of the last few decades. And while the Middle East was under the Ottomans it was a much neglected, but stable and peaceful region, I think. My guess is that these sorts of troubles began with the oil discoveries, when there was something to fight over. Exasperated by many other factors, of course.
